Our History

In 1986, the matriarchs of the Métis Women’s Council of Edmonton established a founding vision to recognize the needs of Indigenous seniors, foster community, and enhance their wellness.

Our organizational history is marked by dynamic growth and adaptability. For example, in 1992 we acquired a van that propelled the growth of our community and offerings. We were named the Native Seniors Centre on July 19, 1994, and have been known as the Edmonton Aboriginal Seniors Centre since March 28, 2012. Today, we carry our founding vision, history, and name with us into the future.

As a membership-led organization and in the spirit of sharing and inclusivity, we offer programs and services that nurture the spiritual, physical, mental, emotional well-being of Edmonton Aboriginal seniors. Together, we aim to create a welcoming community with Aboriginal seniors that bridges service gaps and empowers them to live the vibrant and fulfilling lives they deserve.

In 2021, we started on a new transformative journey as an organization to expand our programs and services. We continue to experience unprecedented growth, now serving over 2,200 members annually. Our members reflect the diversity and richness of Indigenous cultures and communities in the city.

As we look to the future, we remain steadfast in our mission to enhance the well-being of Edmonton Aboriginal seniors through culturally guided and accessible services and supports.
